As one would imagine, the logistics of moving from one coast to the other has been a bit of a nightmare. Not to mention the fact that we’re moving from a 4 bedroom, 1400 square foot house, to a 1 bedroom, 850 square foot apartment. As a result, we had to take a serious look at all of our belongings and decide what we truly need to survive (i.e. winter clothes, booze) and what we can live without for the next two years (i.e. our fondue pot, a chess set Jeff bought in Japan but has never used). Though most of my items were put in storage, Jeff insisted that we take at least one samurai sword for protection/warding off would-be muggers on the subway. Luckily, we have supportive families who agreed to store just a few boxes and a car for us while we’re living in Manhattan.

Our timeline leading up to the day we actually arrived at Apartment 16A looked something like this:
December 22, 2010: congratulations, you’ve been accepted to Columbia Business School! “Holy shit, we’re moving to New York City!”
January-April: obsessively discuss the move, stress out about the move, but don’t actually do anything for the move.
May 1-15: spend more time discussing the stress of packing than actually packing.
May 16-18: pack one box, draft “to-do” list. Feel much better about our progress.
May 19: stress out about the move.
June 2-10: travel to New York City to find an apartment. Get taken advantage of by every broker in the City. Ditch the brokers and find suitable apartment by ourselves. Agree to give up first-born son in exchange for one year lease.
May 20-July 10: pack all items to be stored in Denver, purge home of all unnecessary items, become frustrated and start throwing everything in sight away. Jeff makes over 18 trips to Goodwill; most items not accepted. Sell bike, couches, coffee table, painting, desk and DVD player on Craigslist. Make a total of $28.50.
July 11: movers pack the rest of our belongings, including a half-eaten box of Puffins. And Cali.
July 12: Door-to-Door storage pod arrives. Fill pod to brim (sorry KS and Dad!).
July 14: Door-to-Door pod en route to Denver.
July 15: forced out on the street after lease expires and new tenants move in.
July 18: discover that our stuff has not even left San Diego, but has been sitting on a truck for the last week. Bribe driver to deliver our stuff in Manhattan before August 2nd. July 19-20: Jeff drives my car to San Antonio.
July 20-24: relaxing weekend at the Texas coast.
July 25: arrive in Manhattan!
